Basic Purpose

To oversee, manage, and direct the activities of Headquarter’s and Pensacola credit and property underwriting of first mortgage and equity loans. Serve as primary underwriting contact for mortgage and equity secondary marketing investors. Help determine Mortgage Underwriting strategy to define priorities and implement plans to achieve Real Estate Lending’s strategic goals and objectives. Oversee project and process management within the region to meet strategic objectives and service goals. Collaborate with Pensacola management partners on strategies to ensure effective/seamless coordination of efforts between the different locations. Direct report to the SVP Mortgage Lending.


• Assume responsibility/accountability for the leadership, direction, and management of the Mortgage Underwriting region, including the Metro and Pensacola Underwriting branches
• Determine and review gaps in division/branch performance, establish division/branch performance metrics, and ensure appropriate improvements are initiated and managed
• Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and NFCU policies and procedures in addition to the applicable underwriting guidelines for investors, government programs, and third party automated underwriting systems (including but not limited to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, VA, FHA, ECOA, and automated underwriting for conventional, VA and equity loans)
• Plan, direct, and lead the strategic recommendations of senior executive leadership regarding the region/branch’s underwriting operations and direction, results, and compliance with organizational objectives and regulatory matters
• Implement short and long-term regional strategy and goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness; implement improvements, as needed
• Serve as underwriting expert for secondary marketing mortgage investors; participate in investor negotiations and the development of new mortgage products and mortgage production  reviews/changes
• Serve as a member of the Credit Policy and Authorization Changes Committee to review and establish guidelines for underwriter and automated loan dispositions
• Collaborate with production operations leadership and systems support for specific projects impacting the Underwriting Branch to ensure smooth, timely, and efficient file movement.
• Review region/branch effectiveness of operational processes, analyze trends, and report on opportunities for improved efficiencies, technologies, and expansion of company growth
• Provide positive leadership to the region through teaching, training, employee engagement, succession planning, and mentorship programs
• Identify staffing needs and management needs within the REL division and work with recruiting and HR to identify and hire qualified candidates
• Monitor projects assigned to ensure that project goals and objectives are completed according to schedule
• Represent the Lending Department as liaison and spokesperson to Navy Federal committees, other Departments and senior management regarding Underwriting issues
• Perform supervisory/management duties
   o Set direction to ensure goals and objectives align with regional/branch strategy
   o Select management and other key personnel; oversee talent development/succession planning
   o Collaborate with leadership/executive colleagues to develop/execute lending initiatives and/or regional/branch strategies
   o Oversee the preparation and execution of the division/regional Annual Financial Plan (AFP)
   o Manage merit pay in accordance with specified objectives and guidelines
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Economics, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• Extensive knowledge of mortgage and equity underwriting products, services, processes and procedures; VA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and private investor requirements; and consumer compliance laws and regulations
• Significant experience with the extension of credit and management of risk
• Significant experience participating in the investor negotiations and development of new products
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently with automated systems
• Advanced skill leading with diplomacy & tact while maintaining appropriate assertiveness and persistence
• Extensive experience in managing multiple priorities independently and/or in a team environment
• Expert skill in results-oriented leadership in a challenging environment
• Extensive experience in demonstrating thought-leadership, initiative taking, decision-making and creativity in solving business problems
• Significant experience in identifying relevant analytical problems, determining appropriate diagnostic methods, and solving unique and complex issues/problems

Desired Qualifications and Education Requirements:

• Master's degree in Business Administration, Management, Economics, or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• Advanced knowledge of Navy Federal's mortgage underwriting products, services, programs, policies and procedures
