Basic Purpose

The Senior Technical Accountant is responsible for assisting the team with accounting pronouncement implementation, ensuring all activities comply with all accounting regulations, and effectively communicating accounting conclusions and judgments for largely complex transactions. The incumbent will collaborate on the implementation and maintenance of a central accounting policy repository.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Applies basic to broad knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) to the preparation of NFCU financial statements
• Ensures compliance with GAAP and ASC by applying accounting standards in the preparation of NFCR financial statements
• Identifies simplifying assumptions and accounting methods, and instances of incorrect application of GAAP/ASC; quantifies the impact of such treatment and recommends solution
• Investigates, resolves and /or escalates complex discrepancies, data entry errors, and out of balance situations; prepares and presents recommendations for immediate action or proposals for policy changes to prevent losses
• Serves as point of contact for inquiries and problem resolution in collaboration with all levels of management and staff across the organization
• Performs research to assist with responses to inquiries from internal and external auditors
• Performs variance analysis and generates reports including associated justification
• Identifies opportunities for process improvement and presents recommendations for implementation
• Participates on project teams and assists with the development and integration testing for new or enhanced automated financial accounting systems
• Keeps abreast of emerging accounting policies or updates and assists with the maintenance of the Accounting Policy Manual
• Executes financial and operational controls as designed and according to the control descriptions

QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or CPA Candidate
• Knowledge and understanding of the application of the rules of GAAP
• Prior experience in an accounting role demonstrating an in-depth knowledge and understanding of accounting functions and transactions, reconciliation techniques and technical accounting information
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and general working experience with technical accounting memos
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and to coach, train and guide teammates in the application of GAAP and accounting rules
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with both internal and external contacts and to respond to requests regarding complex financial information/data
 
DESIRED:
• Certified Public Accountant designation
• Prior work experience in public accounting applying complex accounting treatments and resolving complex accounting issues
• Experience researching technical accounting issues and making recommendations for the application and implementation of accounting principles
• Ensures integrity over financial reports with measurements in Fair Value accounting
• Utilize the FASB to develop understanding of greater accounting principles
• Familiar with securitization accounting and able to provide measurements of securities
