Basic Purpose

To develop and implement public relations programs designed to keep the public and members informed of Navy Federal products, services, programs, accomplishments, and goals while promoting a positive corporate and community image. Moderates communications between the organization and various media outlets such as newspapers, radio broadcasts and television stations. Ensure messages are consistent with the brand, organization standards and related industry/regulatory requirements. Develop and implement community outreach programs including social & community awareness incentives. Serve as corporate spokesperson with the media for the credit union.


• Act as primary support for Corporate Communications Manager with media and public relations programs, communications, records, requests and inquiries
• Participate and monitor in the tactical implementation of community outreach programs, its performance, success and expenses/budgets
• Provide creativity, insight and recommendations in the development of Public Relations strategies , campaigns and programs
• Write, prepare, and review articles for dissemination on external publications, websites, and social media outlets
• Create news releases, fact sheets, correspondence, legislator educational packets, and pertinent reports to educate members, legislators/regulators, the public, and our advocacy groups about NFCU and the products and services to members, retirees, and employees
• Translate complex subject matter, such as investments, finance, and finance regulation, into understandable terms for members, retirees, and employees
• Create a resource database containing internal/external information such as copy/quotes, news clips, video and audio from news sources referencing NFCU , and SME interviews to reporters for earned media
• Review, edit, and proofread written materials produced by the staff for style consistency, information accuracy and best practices applications
• Field and screen media inquiries to prepare for SME interviews
• Participate in developing talking points for SMEs and pertinent staff on NFCU messaging
• Act as backup in preparing correspondence for SMEs, the CEO etc.
• Troubleshoot issues and apply best practices towards problem resolution, and gain acceptance for a win-win solution
• Collaborate with team members to identify and monitor NFCU issues, relevant news angles and headlines pertinent to NFCU business or to members/ prospective members
• Collaborate with internal and external Communications team members and others on new and ongoing communications projects to achieve objectives
• Advocate and promote value of public relations expertise to support/supplement business goals in functional areas such as media, community, consumer, industry, and employee and investor relations


• Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• At least six years experience in public relations, communications or similar field
• Experience in the communications and public relations fields, preferably in a corporate
• In-depth knowledge of communications, promotions and media relations
• Previous experience with mainstream media, external social networking/social media outlets and emerging media tools
• Demonstrated skill to work quickly and creatively, prioritize and meet deadlines, and simultaneously coordinate projects with outside vendors
• Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
• Managing multiple priorities independently and/or in a team environment to achieve goals
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communications skills
• Strong research, analytical and problem solving skills
• Strong organizational, planning and time management skills
• Strong skills maintaining information accuracy, attention to detail and meeting deadlines
• Desired – Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English or a related discipline.
• Desired – Experience in finance communications
• Desired – Familiarity with U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense (DOD) organizations and protocols
• Desired – Working knowledge of credit union related regulations, organization, and products and services
• Desired – Supervisory experience is preferred
