Basic Purpose

To supervise the day-to-day functions of Navy Federal’s Mortgage Servicing accounting records and ensure they are accurately and completely maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). To supervise and oversee the maintenance, balancing, and reconciliation process for the general ledger (GL) and subsidiary ledger accounts.


1. Supervises the day to day activities of Mortgage Servicing Reconciliations business unit goals & objectives align with branch and department priorities.
• Reconciles all servicing general ledgers, servicing invoices at the loan level, application fees, corporate advances, suspense, VA funding fee, bad checks, negative cdvs, and aging of suspense accounts and cash
• Communicates with Data Control, Remittance Processing, Comptroller General Accounting, Origination staff to balance/resolve and clear account related discrepancies
• Reviews production and exception reports to identify and resolve exceptions
• Determines corrective action(s) to bring performance up to standards and expectations

2. Establishes qualitative and quantitative measures to meet Accounting Technicians goals and expectations.
• Establishes and implements measurable productivity standards and monitors outcomes
• Compiles data and prepares month end and quarter end financial reporting
• Assists the management team with the month end closing process to include review of account balances, and responds to/researches questions on variances; assists in board report preparation
• Reviews daily productivity logs for adherence to work standards
• Compiles statistical reports weekly, monthly, annually for Management

3. Develops and maintains desk-top procedure manuals for the section.
• Reviews, monitors and implements monthly LPS enhancements, as appropriate (large system changes would require assistance from various Project Managers while smaller changes may not)
• Develops macros and automated applications to ensure accurate processing of mortgage reconciliations
• Works with Information Services Department personnel to develop complex automated applications
• Implements changes to automated systems and provides training on these systems to section personnel
• Directs process improvement and system enhancement projects and initiatives, including those which involve the development, enhancement, modification, and testing of automated systems
• Implements changes to automated systems and provides training on these systems to section personnel

4. Ensures adherence to investor guidelines, state and federal regulations and alignment with Navy Federal policies and procedures.
• Supervises Accounting/Reconciliation output and trends to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance with applicable rules and regulations
• Monitors and communicates changes to mortgage account management rules and regulations
• Communicates and/or implements corrective actions to affect improvements to mortgage & equity account operations

5. Performs supervisory duties.
• Reviews the work of subordinates to ensure accuracy and timeliness of daily balancing and general ledger reconciliations
• Assesses daily production and adjusts work assignments to meet work volume fluctuations
• Analyzes workflow, procedures and practices, makes recommendations to improve quality/efficiency
• Communicates changes in policies and or procedures to staff and provides staff with clear precise directions/goals and clear measurements
• Meets all required SLAs in your assigned areas and performance goals
• Assists in the preparation of the AFP and monthly variance tracking reports

6. Performs other duties as assigned or appropriate.

Qualifications -- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal and state payroll laws, and the NCUA Accounting Manual
• In-depth knowledge of the techniques and systems used in the management, analysis and reporting of financial information
• Progressively responsible experience which demonstrates a thorough knowledge of management practices, accounting principles, practices, laws and regulations preferably in a corporate/financial environment
• Previous experience in supervisory/lead positions in a financial institution
• Ability to use good judgment and to make sound decisions in an independent manner
• Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Proficiency in leading, guiding and directing others in completing projects or work assignments
• Skill in problem identification and resolution, planning and organizing work to reach work goals, and working in a team environment
• Demonstrated ability to select, develop, direct workflow and motivate staff
• Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving and leadership skills
• Ability to act as a Project Manager of complex, integrated risk assessment projects and initiatives
• Proven ability to make decisions in a fast-paced financial operation
• Highly effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• Strong knowledge of PCs and applicable software applications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, auditing, Business Administration/Finance or related field or equivalent education/experience
• Knowledge of Navy Federal objectives, policies & procedures, organizational and functional relationships
• LPS experience preferred
